Maximal Minis is the passion of Los Angeles based artist and interior designer, Amy Kay, who has turned a beloved childhood pastime into a way to express herself through storytelling. Using vintage dollhouses, furniture, and dolls, she creates nostalgic vignettes, then captures them in photos, both inside her dollhouses and outside, “on location”, using real world places and landmarks - blending a mini, make-believe past with our full size, real life present time.
Amy comes by her “maximalist” tendencies naturally. After working in various fields, starting with visual merchandising for major department stores and later in Feature Film Post Production for Warner Bros, she discovered her talent for interior design while reimagining her own spaces and helping friends with theirs. Shortly after leaving Warner Bros to raise a family, her home was showcased in a tour of homes fundraiser for the local high school, after which she was sought out to design many other homes. Amy also loves finding ways to incorporate meaningful items or heirlooms into her designs, often giving them new life with restoration, or by repurposing them in creative ways.
Now, turning her attention to her childhood passion for dollhouses, she designs on a much smaller scale, creating rooms and scenes that are full of color, pattern and little details that tell bigger story.
